Paradise Lost

Istuzu beach stretches six kilometers of sandy strip separating the Mediterranean sea and the Dalyan river. The guides tell us that this is the place where the Mediterranean and Aegean seas connect. On the one hand Istuzu caress the salt waves, and on the other — embraces the river. After swimming in the sea, you can go to the beach and in a minute to plunge into the fresh water of Dalyan. The beach is also called turtle, as it displays the offspring of large turtles Caretta-Caretta. This is how I saw the Dalyan river carrying its waters to the Mediterranean sea. It flows in the South-West of Turkey through a system of lakes in which salt and fresh water are mixed, forming a unique ecosystem. Delta Dalyan — the only and unique corner of the Earth, which was chosen for life rare species of birds, fish and plants. At the place where the river merges with the Mediterranean sea, stretches six-kilometer strip of land, covered with yellow sand. This is the beach of Istuzu, which in 1995 was recognized as the best in the world. The place is magical. With one hand he caressed the waves, and on the other — hugs the river. After swimming in the Mediterranean sea, you can go to the beach and in a minute to plunge into the fresh water of the Dalyan river. Is it not surprising! The beach is also called a turtle, because here the offspring of large sea turtles Caretta-Caretta, who live on Earth for 95 million years. In April-may they lay eggs in soft sand Istuzu. After a couple of months, the light appears offspring. At night, young turtles find their way home to the sea, focusing on the light of the moon. Growing up, they return to the Sands of Istuzu to give life to a new generation. Istuzu and his turtles Our flat-bottomed boat slowly approaches a wooden platform lined near the shore, and we step barefoot on the warm sand. The breeze from the sea waves our hair and envelops us in a pleasant coolness. The air is shivering with heat. Crystal clear sea water caresses our feet. Istuzu beach is deserted today. Just us and a couple who came here on a boat from the mainland. In the distance you can see the fabulous wooden houses with wooden paths laid to them on the sand. We wander on the beach, run on the waves rolling on the shore, sunbathe and dream. This place seems like Paradise to me. But it’s a giant relic of the inhabitants of the Caretta-Caretta is not visible. They “left” to hunt the lake formed by the Dalyan river. We get into the boat and go in search of turtles. The captain has already prepared us an excellent dinner of huge crabs, which he bought from fishermen leading their simple craft in the river. Blue pearl crab lives in the Delta of Dalyan large population, and its catch is allowed. Fishermen, and sometimes simple travelers catch crabs for bait in shallow pools, where they dart along the bottom and crawling in the reeds. Some fishing boats scurrying along the river are equipped with stoves to prepare the catch. Our captain ties one crab to the fishing line and lowers it into the water. Just a few minutes later she appears — a large and predatory Caretta-Caretta. Trying to get the prey, it then sticks out of the water its spotted muzzle, then emerges, showing us his meter shell, then again goes under water. The reptile’s mouth is like the beak of a giant bird, and its paws are like huge wings. In addition to the Caretta-Caretta in these waters home and her lesser known and smaller relatives are the Nile turtles that have dark color and elongated heads. Other pleasures Our boat again makes its way through the reeds, wriggling among the water labyrinths. The captain puts the wheel in my hands. At first it seems to me that I can not cope with driving a vehicle unfamiliar to me. But I quickly learn and lead our little ship forward on the course, famously fitting into the turns and bends of the river. On the right side there are banks overgrown with forests and birds running on the water, on the left — turtles, curiously watching us. And in the vicinity of Dalyan there are unique hot sulfur springs and healing mud, rejuvenating and healing the body. Near one of them we make a stop. This place is like a fun attraction, where we are offered first to lie in the mud, and then hold a photo shoot, and then go to soak in a bad-smelling sulfur source. Locals say that such a mud bath to rejuvenate ten years. Who better than them to know that? Pomolodevshimi, OZDOROVITEL and having reserved a good mood, we go back to the path along the river. Traces of history In a moment the boat approaches at a rock on which the ancient city of Kaunos towers, and we go to walk on its hot sun ruins. The city was built by the son of king Miletos — Kaunos — before our era, turning it into a famous port and shopping center. At different times it was ruled by different kingdoms, on his throne sat different kings. But time and the earthquake that formed the most beautiful Delta of Dalyan, separated the city from the sea and destroyed it, leaving only the amphitheater, the wreckage of columns and some other structures for history. Once again in the boat, we enthusiastically admire the panorama of the tombs carved in the yellow rock. These are the tombs of the Lycian kings who once ruled Kaunos. They look like small palaces, framed by columns and a pediment, which is decorated with a bas-relief of a lion. On the territory of the former Lycia scattered many rocky Acropolis, where the rest of the merchants and military leaders, but the tomb of Kaunos — especially impressive. After all, they buried the kings! …The scorching heat of the day subsides, and Dalyan gradually envelops the evening coolness. We swim further down the river, again lost among the tall reeds in which the boats of fishermen and turtles hide from us. I want to remember forever this peaceful place, like Paradise. A place where I felt so good…
